About This Worksheet
This Grade 7 Language Arts worksheet helps students identify pronouns and determine the grammatical job each one performs. A pronoun may act as a subject, direct object, indirect object, object of a preposition, predicate nominative, possessive determiner, or possessive pronoun. Students examine complete sentences and record every pronoun they find in a chart. For example, in “She handed him the map,” she is the subject and him is the indirect object.
Learning Goals
The main goal is to help students understand that pronouns can perform many of the same jobs as nouns. Students should already be able to recognize personal, possessive, and reflexive pronouns. This activity moves them toward analyzing how each pronoun connects to the verb, preposition, or noun around it. Student Tasks
On this worksheet, students will read ten sentences and underline every pronoun. They will then write the sentence number, the pronoun, and its function in the large chart. Some sentences contain more than one pronoun, so students must record each one separately. The examples include pronouns working as subjects, objects, possessive words, and reflexive forms.
Common Challenges
Students may confuse pronoun type with pronoun function. For example, their is possessive in form, but it functions as a possessive determiner because it comes before a noun. Others may identify the pronoun correctly but assign the wrong object role. Encourage students to find the verb or preposition first and ask how the pronoun relates to it.
Teaching Suggestions
A teacher can model one sentence by labeling the subject, verb, and objects before naming the pronoun functions. Students can then repeat the same process independently. At home, a parent can ask what question the pronoun answers, such as “Who did it?” “To whom?” or “Whose?” These simple questions make formal grammar labels easier to understand.
