This worksheet helps tenth-grade students match right-triangle descriptions with the correct trigonometric equation. Students are given eight situations describing a right triangle, a reference angle, a known side, and an unknown side. They then match each situation to an equation bank containing sine, cosine, and tangent expressions. The directions specifically tell students not to solve, so the focus stays on setting up the relationship correctly.

For example, if the known side is adjacent to the reference angle and the unknown side is the hypotenuse, students should look for a cosine equation because cosine compares adjacent to hypotenuse. If the known side is opposite and the unknown side is adjacent, tangent is the correct relationship. Students must use both the side roles and the angle named in the problem.

What Students Practice

Students practice identifying opposite, adjacent, and hypotenuse from written triangle information and then translating those roles into a trig equation. This requires them to connect SOH-CAH-TOA with actual side names and numerical values.

The matching format also gives students practice reading mathematical notation carefully. They must check the trig function, angle measure, numerator, and denominator before deciding which equation belongs with each triangle.

Setting up the equation correctly is often the hardest part of a trigonometry problem. Once the correct ratio is written, solving is usually straightforward calculator work and algebra. This worksheet gives students focused practice on the setup before adding that extra step.

Common Challenges

Students may find the correct trig function but reverse the numerator and denominator. Remind them that SOH-CAH-TOA gives both the function and the order of the sides. For example, sine is always opposite divided by hypotenuse.

Another common mistake is using the wrong acute angle from the triangle. The side roles must be determined relative to the reference angle named in the problem. A side that is opposite one acute angle will be adjacent to the other.

How To Use It

Teachers can use this worksheet after students can identify side roles and choose a trig function. It works well for independent practice, partner matching, homework, or a review station. Having students write O, A, and H beside the side names before matching can make their reasoning more visible.

Parents and homeschool teachers can ask, “Which side is known, and which side are we trying to find?” Then identify their roles relative to the reference angle and use SOH-CAH-TOA to find the matching equation. There is no need to calculate anything yet.

This worksheet is intended for Grade 10 geometry and supports CCSS HSG-SRT.C.6 by reinforcing the definitions of sine, cosine, and tangent through side ratios. It also builds toward HSG-SRT.C.8, where students use those ratios to solve right triangles.
