About This Worksheet
This worksheet gives eighth-grade students practice comparing rates of change shown in different forms. Each problem presents two linear relationships, with one relationship shown as an equation, table, or set of graph points and the other shown in another form. Students find the rate of change for both relationships and then decide which one is greater. This helps students understand that slope can be found and compared even when the information is presented in different ways.
For example, one relationship may be written as y = 4x + 7, while the other is shown with points such as (0, 2), (2, 12), and (4, 22). Students identify 4 as the rate from the equation and calculate the rate from the points before making a comparison. Remind students to identify the form first before deciding how to find the rate.
Students may also compare rates before checking their signs. For example, -2 is greater than -5 even though 5 has a larger absolute value. Encourage students to place confusing values on a number line if needed before choosing the greater rate.

Teachers can use this worksheet after students have learned how to find slope from equations, tables, and points separately. It works especially well as a mixed review because students must decide which strategy to use on each problem. You could solve one example from each type together before having students complete the remaining comparisons independently.
