This worksheet helps eleventh-grade students decide which method is most efficient for solving a given quadratic equation. Students examine twelve equations and choose among factoring, the square-root method, completing the square, or the quadratic formula. They do not solve the equations. Instead, the entire focus is on recognizing structure and selecting the smartest approach.

For example, an equation that is already written as a squared expression equal to a number is usually a strong square-root-method candidate. A quadratic with easy integer factors may be best solved by factoring. Equations that do not factor nicely may be better handled with the quadratic formula.

What Students Practice

Students practice looking at the shape of an equation before starting calculations. They identify clues such as perfect-square structure, easy factor pairs, awkward coefficients, or equations that are already close to vertex form.
