About This Worksheet
This worksheet helps eleventh-grade students practice adding pairs of polynomials and writing each answer in standard form. Students work through eight problems that contain several terms of different degrees. They add the two polynomials, combine like terms, and then arrange the finished expression from the greatest exponent down to the smallest.
The main goal is to help students see that adding polynomials is really a matter of finding matching terms and combining their coefficients. The variable parts stay the same. Students do not multiply the polynomials or change the exponents during addition.
What Students Practice
Students practice lining up or mentally grouping terms that have the same variable and exponent. They then add the coefficients of those matching terms while leaving unlike terms alone. Once everything is combined, they rewrite the result in standard form.
The worksheet includes positive and negative coefficients, so students also get practice with signed-number arithmetic. Some terms may cancel completely, while others may remain unchanged because there is no matching term in the other polynomial.

Students may try to add exponents when combining like terms. Remind them that exponents stay the same during addition. Only the numbers in front of matching terms are added.
Another common mistake is overlooking a missing term. If one polynomial has a term that the other does not, that term simply carries down into the answer. Students should not force unlike terms together.

Teachers can use this worksheet after students have practiced identifying like terms. It works well for guided examples, independent classwork, homework, or review before polynomial subtraction. Having students underline or color-code matching terms can make the first few problems easier to organize.
Parents and homeschool teachers can tell students to “match first, add second.” Find the terms that have exactly the same variable and exponent, add the numbers in front, and then put the final expression in order from highest power to lowest.
