Students work through six systems where one equation is already written, or can easily be written, in a form that allows one variable expression to be substituted into the other equation.

The basic idea is to replace one variable with something equal to it. This turns two equations with two unknowns into one equation with only one unknown. Once students find that first value, they substitute it back into one of the original equations to find the second value. The two numbers are then written together as an ordered pair.

What Students Practice

Students practice deciding which expression should be substituted and where it should go. They then simplify the new equation, solve for one variable, and use that result to find the other variable.

The worksheet includes systems where either x or y is already isolated, along with problems where a little rearranging may be needed. This helps students understand substitution as a flexible method rather than a memorized set of steps.

Another common mistake is finding one variable and stopping. A system solution needs both coordinates. After finding the first variable, students must substitute it back into one of the original equations to find the second.

Sign errors can also happen when the substituted expression contains subtraction or negative numbers. Using parentheses around the substituted expression can help students keep the algebra organized.

Teachers can use this worksheet after students understand what a system solution means and have seen systems represented graphically. It works well for guided examples, independent classwork, homework, or review before elimination.

Parents and homeschool teachers can explain substitution as “replace one letter with what we already know it equals.” Once the problem has only one variable left, solve it normally. Then put that answer back into an original equation to find the missing coordinate.
