This worksheet helps ninth-grade students write compound inequalities from real-world rules and restrictions. Eight situations involve concert ages, climbing heights, race times, gaming scores, escape-room ages, obstacle-course heights, tournament scores, and workshop attendance. Students define the variable shown and then translate each pair of conditions into an AND or OR inequality. This gives them practical experience using inequalities to describe real limits.

For example, if guests must be at least 13 years old but younger than 18, the age must satisfy both conditions. That creates an AND inequality describing all ages from 13 up to, but not including, 18. Other situations use OR when either one of two separate conditions qualifies.

What Students Practice

Students practice identifying key phrases such as “at least,” “at most,” “more than,” “below,” and “fewer than.” They then choose the correct inequality symbols and decide whether the rules should be joined with AND or OR. This strengthens the connection between language and algebra.

Another common mistake is choosing AND or OR based only on the wording style instead of the meaning. Encourage students to ask whether both requirements must happen together or whether either one is enough. That question usually leads to the correct connector.
