Story Subject Worksheet

Story Subject Worksheet

About This Worksheet

This Grade 1 reading worksheet helps children identify who a story is mostly about. Students read a short passage about Mia bringing a toy car to the park, playing near the swings, losing the toy, and later finding it in her bag. They then choose whether the story is mostly about the park, the toy car, or Mia.

Learning Goals

The main goal is to help children identify the main subject of a story. Students practice noticing which person or thing appears throughout the passage and connects all the events together. This supports main-idea thinking, character recognition, and story comprehension.

Student Tasks

Children read the story about Mia from beginning to end. They then look at three answer choices and circle who or what the story is mostly about. The activity encourages them to think about the whole story instead of one object or setting.

Common Challenges

Some children may choose the toy car because it is important to the story. Others may choose the park because that is where much of the action happens. A parent or teacher can ask, “Who is doing the actions and having the problem?” to help the child identify the main subject.

Teaching Suggestions

Teachers can model how to look for the character who appears in most of the sentences. Parents and homeschool educators can ask the child to retell the story in one sentence. If the retell begins with Mia and explains what happened to her, that usually points to the main subject.

Worksheet Features

The worksheet includes one short narrative passage and three simple answer choices. The familiar park setting and lost-toy problem make the story easy for Grade 1 readers to follow. This printable works well for guided reading, homework, story comprehension, or main-character review.
