Feeling Clues

About This Worksheet

This Grade 1 reading worksheet helps children infer how a character feels by looking closely at what happens in a story. Students read about Maya dropping her ice cream on a hot sidewalk, watching it melt, and beginning to shake as tears fill her eyes. They then choose the feeling that best matches the clues and explain what part of the story helped them decide.

Learning Goals

The main goal is to help children infer emotions from actions and events rather than waiting for the story to name the feeling directly. Students practice noticing clues such as tears, shaking, and losing something special. They then connect those details with a likely emotion. These skills support character understanding, emotional vocabulary, and reading comprehension.

Student Tasks

Children read the short story about Maya and consider how she probably feels. They circle the best feeling word from the choices and underline the clue that supports their answer. Then they complete two sentences explaining the inference and the evidence that helped them make it.

Common Challenges

Some children may choose a feeling they would have in the same situation without checking the story clues. Others may find the correct feeling but struggle to explain why. A parent or teacher can ask, “What did Maya do that shows how she feels?” to move the child back to the text.

Teaching Suggestions

Teachers can review a few common feeling clues, such as smiling, crying, laughing, or shaking. Parents and homeschool educators can have children act out the different feeling choices and compare them with Maya’s actions. Encourage the child to point to the exact clue before writing the inference.
