Text Connections Worksheet

Text Connections Worksheet

About This Worksheet

This worksheet is a great way to help students connect what they read to the bigger picture. At this stage, we really want students to go beyond “just the text” and start linking ideas to their own experiences, other texts, and the world around them. I’d tell another teacher this is where reading starts to feel more meaningful and personal. It’s also a strong comprehension check-if students can make connections, they truly understand what they read.

Curriculum and Grade Alignment

This activity supports Grade 6 skills in analyzing informational texts and making meaningful connections. The goal is for students to connect ideas in the text to themselves, other texts, and real-world situations. It aligns with Common Core Standards RI.6.1 and RI.6.2, and supports TEKS 6.6(B), making connections to deepen understanding.

Student Tasks

Students read an informational passage about renewable energy. Then they make three types of connections: text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world. For each one, they explain how the connection helps them better understand the topic. This encourages deeper thinking and reflection.

Common Challenges and Misconceptions

Students may give very surface-level connections that don’t actually deepen understanding. Some might confuse the different types of connections. Others may struggle to explain how the connection helps them. I usually remind them, “Don’t just make the connection-explain why it matters.”

Implementation Guidance

This works really well as a discussion-based activity. I’d model one strong connection and explain it clearly. It’s also great for partner work where students can share their ideas. At home, parents can ask their child how the text relates to their life or something they’ve learned before.
