Build an Argument Worksheet

Build an Argument Worksheet

About This Worksheet

This is where everything starts to come together for students. Up to this point, they’ve been analyzing arguments-now they get to try building one themselves. I always like this shift because it shows whether students really get it. They’re not just spotting claims and evidence anymore-they’re creating them. The structure here gives just enough support so students don’t feel overwhelmed, but still encourages independent thinking.

Curriculum and Grade Alignment

This activity supports Grade 6 skills in both analyzing and constructing arguments. The goal is for students to clearly state a claim, support it with reasons, and include relevant evidence. It aligns with Common Core Standards RI.6.8 and W.6.1, focusing on argument writing and analysis. In TEKS, it connects with 6.12(A), developing and supporting a claim with evidence.

Student Tasks

Students are given a topic, such as school uniforms or homework. First, they write a clear claim stating their position. Then they list at least two reasons to support that claim. After that, they add evidence or examples to strengthen their argument. This step-by-step structure helps them organize their thinking.

Common Challenges and Misconceptions

Students often jump straight to opinions without clearly stating a claim. Some may list reasons but forget to support them with evidence. Others may give examples that don’t fully connect to their argument. I usually remind students, “A strong argument always answers ‘why’ and ‘how do you know?'”

Implementation Guidance

This worksheet works really well as a writing workshop activity. I’d model building an argument together before students start. It’s also great for peer review-students can share and give feedback. At home, parents can ask their child to explain their claim and support it out loud.

Details and Features

The worksheet includes a structured graphic organizer. It guides students through claim, reasons, and evidence. The layout is clear and easy to follow. It supports both writing and critical thinking skills.
