Factor Oddball is a fourth grade prime-and-composite activity that gives students another way to practice spotting numbers with different factor structures. Each group contains four values, and three belong to the same number category while one does not. Students decide whether most of the numbers are prime or composite and then cross out the oddball. For example, a set such as 15, 17, 25, and 20 includes three composite numbers and one prime number, making 17 the outlier. Common Challenges and Misconceptions

Some students may see an odd number and automatically call it prime. Numbers such as 9, 15, 21, 25, and 27 are useful reminders that many odd numbers are composite. Others may think every even number behaves the same and forget that 2 is prime. Encourage your child to name one extra factor when calling a number composite. If no factor other than 1 and the number itself can be found, it may be prime.

Implementation Guidance

Teachers can use this worksheet as follow-up practice after introducing divisibility rules for 2, 3, and 5. It works well for partner discussion because students can justify why each number belongs or does not belong. Parents can have the child circle obvious composites first and then examine the remaining numbers. Asking “What factor proves it?” is a simple way to check understanding.
