Penguin Check Worksheet

Penguin Check Worksheet

About This Worksheet

This worksheet is a really strong combination of reading for information and checking understanding with evidence. At this level, we want students to start trusting the text-not guessing, not assuming, but actually going back and confirming what’s true.

The topic (penguins) is engaging and familiar enough to draw students in, but the real focus is on reading carefully and deciding whether each statement is true or false based on the passage. That last part is key. We’re building the habit of asking:
“Where does the text show me that?”

Curriculum and Grade Alignment

This worksheet supports Grade 2 students in identifying key details and verifying information from a text. It aligns with Common Core RI.2.1 and RI.2.2. It also connects to TEKS standards for comprehension and informational text.

Student Tasks

Students read the informational passage and then mark each statement as True or False. In addition, they are asked to underline proof in the passage, which is a really important step toward evidence-based reading.

Common Challenges and Misconceptions

This is where we often see students rely on what they already know instead of what the text says. For example, they might think, “Penguins are birds, so they must fly,” even though the passage clearly says they cannot.

Another challenge is skipping the step of finding proof. Students may answer correctly but not show where they found it. That’s why modeling is so important here.

Implementation Guidance

Teachers can model this by saying:
“Let’s find the sentence that proves this answer.”

Parents can do something similar at home by asking:
“Can you show me where you saw that in the story?”

Over time, this builds a really strong habit of going back to the text.
